Her grandfather, her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer was the first Roberts to arrive in Atlanta. Early on, her father began to take an interest in theater. While a student at Emory University in 1952 he participated in plays on campus as well as in other parts of Atlanta. While stationed at Biloxi the Mississippi state, he was part of a military unit in a production with Betty Lou Bredemus. They were married in 1955. Their first baby son Eric Anthony, was born in 1956. After 1957, the couple resigned from the Air Force and Walter entered Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter worked for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1960, the family moved in Decatur Georgia. Walter as well as Betty Lou produced a Saturday morning show on local TV for children known as Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964. The show was a success and they paid themselves. They established an Actors and Writers Workshop in the same year, which was in operation for six years. In the meantime, they also had two youngsters Lelisa (called Lisa) Billingsley in the year 1965, and Julia (called Julie) in 1967.
