She is Mexican-American by heritage but has American nation by birth. From the time she was little, she's been very keen on playing sports. Gerina began golfing when she was fifteen years old. Gerina has graduated from Goddard High School. When she was in high school, she won her first prize in the New Mexico state golf tournament. The volleyball abilities of her were acknowledged at the national scale. She enrolled in the University of Texas, Texas, for the 2003 academic year. Through the latter period of her career she was the winner of every event where she played. In the course of her undergraduate studies she won the titles as Conference USA Female Athlete and Conference USA Individual Player of the Years.
